Acupuncture

The principle behind acupuncture, a traditional method of treatment practiced by the Chinese since ancient times, is that the vital energy balance in the body is of crucial importance: the life-force (which the Chinese call chi) must circulate freely and without interruption round the meridians, the channels in the body along which the energy circulates (each meridian refers to a particular organ).

Needles are inserted into specific points in the body, which may bear no relation to the site of experienced symptoms of pain, but which command the general energy flow of the entire meridian.

Acupuncture is a complex, vitalistic system of healing based on treating the patient as a whole - body and mind to locate the cause of the complaint which may be physical or mental in terms of energy imbalance and breakdown. Once the natural energy flow is restored, body and mind return to a state of balance and harmony.

Acupuncture can even help break addiction to drugs, alcohol and smoking, by removing and resolving the stresses that caused the addiction in the first place, and play a significant part in stress-control and treatment generally.

If you are considering taking a course of acupuncture it is extremely important to go to a fully qualified, registered practitioner - apply in the first instance to the British Medical Acupuncture Society and the Council for Acupuncture
