Autogenic

Autogenic, as originally developed by Dr Wolfgang Luthe in Canada, are a series of mental exercises designed to help 'switch off' from stress by means of passive concentration. Once the basic techniques of autogenic have been acquired, they can be safely adapted to all sorts of situations in everyday life.

 

Autogenic training offers general improvement in mental well-being, and physical benefits such as lowering of blood pressure, and even reduction in blood cholesterol levels. Autogenic exercises can be particularly effective in curing insomnia, and dealing with examination nerves, jet lag and work stress. Anyone can practice autogenic - no special clothing or equipment are required other than a comfortable chair, ideally in a quiet room.

 

Autogenic training teaches the repetition of a series of phrases designed to induce deep relaxation. Examples of these include:

  • My hands and arms are heavy and warm.

  • My feet and legs are heavy and warm.

  • My abdomen is warm and comfortable.

  • My breathing is deep and even.

  • My forehead is cool.

  • When I open my eyes, I will remain relaxed and refreshed.
