Given that stress is closely linked to change and often intensified by uncertainty, it is easy to appreciate why the children of divorced or divorcing parents often experience stress to an equally great, if not greater, degree as their parents.
Depending on the circumstances of the divorce, the parents are likely to be preoccupied with major practical changes in living arrangements, finances, contact with children, all accompanied by feelings of vulnerability, lowered self- esteem, depression, emotional exhaustion, role-uncertainty, loneliness and loss of sense of purpose and motivation.
Many of these emotions will undoubtedly affect the children involved, who may of course have had previous unhappy experiences of overhearing rows, witnessing angry scenes, and so on.
