The man and wife are miserable with each other but cannot let go. They constantly play dirty pool with each other. Each partner sees the other merely as an object on which to gratify his or her own needs.
There may be verbal and physical violence, aloofness, and periods of hot and cold. If the couple remain married it is largely out of fear of not being married. The presence of children usually deepens the antagonism but is seen as a reason to stay married.
