When You Have To work

About 20 percent of American teenagers have to work, not just for extra things like clothes or trips, but to eat and have clothes at all. Is this a shame? Yes and no. It’s sad that some teens miss out on activities such as band and orchestra, choir, and speech team because they work. And it is true that they miss a lot of studying time. But the things they learn by working are invaluable.

Working as a teenager gives you a better perspective of life. Working helps you to decide what you want to do when you graduate. Working helps you decide if a college education would be worth it or not.

Working at a variety of jobs helps you choose your career. What kind of career would you like? If you think you would like to be a teacher, work as a teacher’s aide. If you would like to work around clothes, work at a dress store. What about working at the bank? The newspaper? As a secretary? Try working at the hospital as a volunteer. Work at a rest home, restaurant, park, telephone company, music company, day-care center, cafeteria, beauty shop, jewelry shop, photography lab, medical lab, insurance, television station, radio station, grocery store, florist, computer store, furniture store, eye doctor. Try as many different types of jobs as you can. As you get older you won’t have so much opportunity to change jobs.

Working while in school is a good way to meet other teenagers, both girls and boys. It’s not easy juggling school and job and social life, but it can be done.

Working while in school helps you learn the value of money. You learn quickly just how hard that dollar is to come by, and you respect it more.
