If this is the only kind of communication you have with your parents, the bond between you can be irreparably damaged. Conversation filled with criticism is not conversation but a sparring match. There is no winner. Here are ten tips for better talk with your parents.

 

  • Willingly stop any activity to talk with your parent.

  • Set aside time for each parent.

  • Focus attention on your parent’s words, tone of voice, and body language.

  • Allow your parent to choose the topic of discussion.

  • Let your parent have an opportunity to dominate the conversation.

  • Express understanding and sympathy.

  • Respect your parentis point of view, and don't evaluate feelings or opinions.

  • Maintain eye contact. Don't look away.

  • Sit physically close to your parent.

  • Relax and enjoy the conversation.
