Intruders In Your Home

If you come home from school and notice that something is wrong or different, do not go in. Go to a neighbor and call the police.

Here are three tips if you surprise an intruder:

  • Avoid any confrontation with the intruder. He may react violently when he is surprised.

  • Be passive. Do not try to capture him. Let him leave alone.

  • Get help immediately. As soon as it is safe, call the police and describe the intruder.

You and your parents should discuss ways of making your home safe while you are there alone after school.

Following are some idea:

  • Have an alarm system installed.

  • Lock all windows and doors. Nearly half of all burglaries occur when someone has failed to lock a door or window.

  • Have a key for each member of the family.

  • Install a phone answering machine for last-minute changes of plans.

  • Keep a radio on if you hate to come into an empty house.

  • Cut back shrubbery that could conceal a person.

  • Do not leave ladders and tools outside.

  • Do not display the family name on the mailbox.

  • Close garage doors.

  • Do not leave notes on doors or windows.

  • Do not leave outside lights on during the day.
