The first thing you should do when you get home from school is to call your parents. Call at least one parent to say that you are safe and sound. It is good to hear their voices when you come home to an empty house. The telephone is a vital tool for families with two working parents.
The afternoon telephone call fulfills an important emotional function. After a long day your parent wants to hear what happened at school, about the 100 you made on that important spelling test, about the boy you like who has finally asked you for a date. You especially need to talk to them if you have had a rough day-your English teacher chewed you out for cheating but you didn't cheat, you were moved to last chair in the band, your best friend stole your boyfriend. We all have days like that, and it helps to talk to the people who love you the most-your parents.
The arrangements you make for daily telephone calls should be clear to you and your parents. It may be easier for you to call your parents at work, but there should be clear rules about that. If your parent has a job where you can’t call, make arrangements to call your grandmother or a close friend when you get home.
