Both the female and male sexes begin their quest for independence by first debonding from their mother. The boy is usually first in seeking to define his masculinity, since it is more urgent. The girl moves from her mother more slowly; seeking assurance from her father.
Young adults who experience debonding with their mother’s acceptance become friendlier in high school. Other mothers use guilt to manipulate their children into spending time with them. Debonding can also occur in parents when they realize that they are being manipulative with their children by using guilt.
