Finding A Runaway Mother Or Father

It can be as simple as talking to the runaway is own mother or father. Talk to the relatives, sympathize with the missing one, and in most cases they will tell you what they know. Usually the relatives know the whereabouts of the runaway.

You can file a missing persons report with the police, but no police department will send out an all-points bulletin or assign detectives to the case because it is not a crime to run away. Every person who is not a minor has the constitutional right to go where he wishes.

The exceptions are missing mentally retarded persons, missing persons over the age of sixty-five, or cases in which there is a suggestion of involuntary disappearance or the possibility of suicide.

Spouses have a constitutional right to run away, but they do not have the right to leave their children destitute. This is called abandonment, and it is a crime.

The Parent Locater Service is an investigative entity set up by the states to track down missing parents for support of their children. Statistics show that seventy-five percent of all absent parents live in the same state as the home they left.
