Women run away from situations that they view as intolerable.
In their late twenties or thirties or forties, they see themselves as victims of emotional neglect. Some want their husband to pay more attention to them. Some feel that their husband treats them like a child. Some feel they have grown beyond their husband intellectually. Many have for years begged their husband to change, and the husband has ignored their pleas. These wives cling to the hope that their running away will bring about those changes.
Battered wives leave their husbands because the threat is always present in their lives. Some have been brutalized for years and have finally had enough. Others go when their children are threatened.
One woman took a year to save five hundred dollars before leaving. Wives more often than husbands leave a note behind. Women are more careful of running away than men. Yet like men, they realize all too soon that there is no perfect mate or life.
