One of the most common reasons for teenage suicide is an unhappy home life. The breakdown of family life is the chief area of concern in seeking answers to the teenage suicide epidemic. Most teenage suicides occur at home, and most have their origin at home. Instead of peace at home, there is fear. Instead of harmony, there is discord. Many suicides have no connection with drugs or alcohol.
Some problems in the home today:
DivorceIn 1980 one in every thirty-six marriages ended in divorce.
RemarriageReplacing an original parent where there is no bond of love with a stepmother or step-father is impossible for many teens.
Blended Families17 percent of remarriages that involve stepchildren on both sides wind up in divorce within three years.
Single-Parent Families12.6 million children under the age of eighteen live with only one parent.
Undeclared DivorceHomes in which the parents are together legally but not emotionally.
The Trauma Of TransitionThe average American family moves every three years. It’s not always easy for teens to make new friends and adjust.
Child AbuseOne million children and teens are abused each year.
The home can be a breeding ground for suicidal thoughts. Teenagers should keep open lines of communication with parents.
