Bowel regularity is essential to good health, and as we've seen, good health is an essential part of stress reduction. Dietary fiber, the food component for regularity, ranks with vitamins and minerals as an essential, albeit often forgotten, nutrient-forgotten because from a relatively early age, most people don't get sufficient fiber. This means increased risk of fiber-related diseases, which include diverticulosis, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, high blood pressure, and many others. Only 5 percent of adults meet their daily dietary fiber requirement. Most people get only 50 percent of their daily dietary fiber.
Our bodies produce many materials that are eliminated in urine by way of the gallbladder or through the intestine itself the system should have available adequate dietary fiber to bind up these materials and flush them from the body. Generally this means getting 25 to 35 grams of dietary fiber each day from carbohydrate-rich foods and fiber supplements.
