GABA-A Powerful Neurotransmitter

The amino acid gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA, is created from glutamic acid and vitamin B6. It is the most prevalent inhibitory neurotransmitter in the nervous system. It prevents the hyperactivity or overfiring of nerve cells that occurs during periods of high stress and anxiety.

You can think of GABA as a shield that blocks messages related to anxiety and stress from reaching your brain's motor centers. its effect, then, is a calming one. Along with serotonin, it controls levels of depression and anxiety.

In fact, because of its tranquilizing effects, GABA is often used to treat anxiety and depression. When the GABA system is enhanced, it produces a tonic, calming effect against the adverse stimuli that can bombard you in the many forms of modern life stress.

Food Sources and Dosage

Food sources of GABA are meats, fish, and nuts. The recommended dosage for anxiety is 750 mg.
