Dosage Recommendations

The recommended dosage for insomnia is 2-3 g of valerian as a dried herb or 270-450 mg of extract in water about an hour before going to sleep.

 

For kava, the recommended dosage is 210 mg of kavalactones, also taken an hour before bedtime. For anxiety relief, take 2-3 g of valerian twice a day and 40-70 mg of kavalactones three times a day. Do not take more than 300 mg of kavalactones in a given day.

 

While found generally quite safe, a downside to valerian is its strong odor, which many people find bothersome.
