Passengers can inadvertently cause considerable stress to the driver of the vehicle in which they are traveling, and should be aware of a few do's and don'ts in this respect.
'Backseat drivers' are notoriously stressful passengers: they should be made to realize that the driver is in full, sole charge of the car, and they should not interfere or nag - this can be distracting as well as extremely annoying.
On the other hand, a passenger can do a great deal to help the driver remain stress-free, by keeping a close eye on the road, and map-reading when necessary - getting lost, or taking the wrong turning, can be very stressful for the driver.
When children are passengers in the car, they must understand that they are on no account to distract the driver. They should ride in the back whenever possible, suitably restricted for safety purposes as described in rule 36 of the Highway Code, and on long journeys should be provided with plenty of games and projects which can be carried out safely in the car, to hold their attention and prevent them from becoming a nuisance.
