Although you are inevitably in
others’ hands when you travel by rail, and not in a position to
control the factors which cause stress, there are still a number of
basic precautions you can take to keep the stress to a minimum.
-
If you travel
regularly by train, buy a season ticket, and save
yourself money as well as the stressful aggravation of
waiting in queues. Many firms will help employees avail
themselves of this facility by lending the money towards
the purchase of a season ticket.
-
Stagger your
traveling times if possible, to avoid rush hours.
Flexi-time, practiced successfully by many companies, is
invaluable in this respect.
-
Make optimum use of
your traveling time. Reading a good book or getting
fully informed on some aspect of your work, for
instance, will create a real sense of achievement, even
if your journey has taken longer than expected, and will
more than counterbalance any adverse stress caused.
-
If a group of you
travels together regularly, you could all join in a
shared activity, such as a game of bridge. Some
commuters really get organized and arrange language
learning or wine appreciation courses, lectures by guest
speakers on various topics of common interest, for
instance, to get the most out of their travelling time,
and make the journey more enjoyable.
