Tiredness

Muscular contraction, the result of sitting in an incorrect posture, or of mental tension when feeling frustrated, irritated or impatient, causes considerable fatigue at the wheel. So, it is important to make sure that you are really comfortable in the driving seat, particularly in the back, neck and shoulder areas.

Use a special support cushion or head-rest if this is helpful, and make sure that you do not sit with hunched shoulders, and do not grip the wheel tightly. Relax your neck muscles by making small circling movements with your head while the car is temporarily at a halt - at traffic lights, for example - and practice some simple deep breathing too. Make sure that plenty of fresh air circulates through the car, either from the windows or ventilators.

Make it a rule not to drive for longer than three hours maximum without a break. If you start to feel tired, pull into a layby for a rest, a breath of air or a short walk to stretch your legs, or stop at a service station and have a coffee before resuming your journey. Fatigue makes you lose concentration and can easily cause accidents.
