Traffics Jams

More than anything else on the road, hold-ups because of road works, accidents, or just sheer volume of traffic and inadequate roads to carry it, are calculated to send your blood pressure soaring.

The element of frustration involved - you are literally powerless to do anything about getting caught in a traffic jam - is a powerful stressor, and this is compounded by many driver's tendency to drive particularly selfishly in such situations - cutting in, moving unnecessarily from lane to lane, trying to jump the queue, and so on. Try not to be one of them.

If you can see that the hold-up is likely to last some time, turn oil the engine to keep the car cool, play one of your most soothing cassettes, or listen to the radio. And if you anticipate traffic jams - at a certain time on your way to work, for instance - do your best to avoid them, by leaving home a little earlier, for example.
