Biofeedback is a revolutionary technique, developed over the last 20 years, which promotes awareness of the effects of stress and strain and how these can lead to stress-related disease, by measuring physical responses to stress. Through the use of specialized electronic metering and other devices, subtle, normally undetectable physiological changes are identified and related to conditions of stress and tension.
Appropriate metering instruments measure and monitor certain physiological indicators, especially skin resistance, perspiration, body temperature and brain wave patterns and rhythms, all of which are linked to levels of arousal in the nervous system, retained tension in the muscles, and states of arousal and stress in the functioning of the brain. Electrodes attached to the body and fed into the biofeedback machine indicate the various physiological effects by means of a light or buzzer: as the user seeks consciously to control his or her stress, the light dims or buzzer quietens, indicating the measure of success.
Biofeedback is of great positive value in monitoring and controlling personal stress levels and achieving relaxation, enhanced self- awareness and greater well-being. It can be applied professionally by doctors as an invaluable alternative to drug therapy; to augment the intuitive approach of the psychotherapist; and to monitor those practicing transcendental meditation. Its processes can also be easily mastered by self-users - some machines, widely available in the USA, are no larger than pocket size.
