Coping Strategies

Stress contributes to bad health through physical, and unhealthy habits. Coping strategies is the ways we manage stress. Whether we noticed it or not, we employ ways to cope with stress. These strategies spectrum from negative coping such as denial, avoidance, engaging in alcohol or drug abuse, or overeating to positive coping strategies such as reframing a situation, positive self-talk, or engaging in relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation.

 

If you cope a stressful experiences by negative doing such as smoking or drinking, you are actually using a strategy that may artificially calm you down in the short run, but will contribute more layers of stress in long term. Engaging in negative coping strategy is results from avoiding or denying the existence of stress.

 

People who drink alcohol thought that alcohol has a sedative effects that will calm them down. However, alcohol is also a depressant. It can lead to the worsen mood. In addition, chemicals in alcohol will stress body at a cellular level, wreaking damage to organs like liver.

 

To cope positively with stress, first you need to study the stressful situation, to determine how significant and controllable a stressful event is, and to assess how you can deal with that stress event. Often, when you feel overwhelm, you will be distorted on how much control you have on stress. When you appraise the situation, you will evaluate whether you can change the situation, if not, can you manage the way you react emotionally and the believe that you can make through the stressful situation successfully.

 

Self-efficacy is an internal belief in his or her ability to succeed at something. This belief has been studied and shown to be instrumental in your actual ability to overcome adversity, and manage a stressful situation successfully.
