Coping With Insomnia

  • Take some form of physical exercise during the day.

  • Be sure to get as much fresh air as possible during the day.

  • Avoid a heavy evening meal.

  • Avoid excess alcohol and caffeine at night.

  • Don't go to bed until you feel sleepy.

  • Don't take work to bed with you.

  • Read a few pages of an untaxing book shortly before you want to go to sleep.

  • Make yourself a soothing bedtime drink.

  • If you often find yourself lying awake, consider learning the autogenic relaxation techniques.

  • Make sure your bed is really comfortable: top quality beds come very expensive, but this is one piece of furniture that is well worth a substantial investment.

When stress lies behind insomnia, it is infinitely preferable to locate and deal with its cause, rather than to resort to sleeping pills, which can only provide temporary relief and can easily become addictive. If you have been experiencing particularly stressful problems in your life which prevent you from sleeping, your doctor may advise taking a non-barbiturate sedative for a short period, but this is something you will need to discuss with him.
