Tai Chi

Like yoga, Tai Chi is an ancient Eastern discipline, originating in China and evolving over many centuries. Based on Taoist philosophy, it is concerned with stabilizing and harmonizing the ever-fluctuating rhythmic energies (the Yin and Yang) of the personality and balancing the various forces in the body to promote the flow of the chi, or life-force.

This is achieved through a special art of gentle yet dynamic movements. Slow and dancelike, unlike the more strenuous, held postures of yoga, these ebb and flow continuously, following the rhythms of life itself.

Exercise is just part of the total discipline and spiritual healing process of Tai Chi, but can do much to improve posture and muscle toning, producing a high degree of relaxation, strength and alertness.

The specialized exercises of yoga and Tai Chi can be taught on a one-to-one basis, or, more usually, collectively, in a class environment. Whichever, they require a fully trained instructor, and need to be carried out on a regular basis.

The same applies to all forms of exercise, either within the framework of everyday routine, or as a special activity: for any exercise to be really effective, it is important to go gently at first and build up a routine gradually.
