The Eastern philosophy of yoga emphasizes the partnership of mental and physical discipline to achieve total fulfillment and control. In Hatha Yoga, the type most commonly practiced in the West, body fitness is acquired by the use of a series of postures or asanas, practiced regularly and intended to massage the internal organs.

 

Yoga is a way of life for its true students, who are expected to follow a code of special ethics, and it is far, far more than just a way of keeping fit, as is sometimes thought in the West. However, Hatha Yoga exercises learned from a qualified teacher and practiced regularly in class, or at home, can do much to achieve a healthy body and quiet mind - an ideal partnership for handling adverse stress.
