Athletes learn early that high-fat foods make them sluggish. Fat requires more oxygen for metabolism and takes energy-yielding oxygen, which is then used inefficiently, to metabolize the fat. So, athletes learn to rely on carbohydrates for energy. The body uses a 50:50 ratio of carbohydrate to fat in a long event, such as a marathon.
Everyone can take a lesson from the athletic experience because it has its counterpart in the mental energy we all require. If you want your mind to be alert, learn to enjoy high-complex carbohydrate foods and avoid fat. This enables your brain to function at an optimum level.
Avoid protein sources that are high in fat. Seek out entrees such as fish and lean red meat, and avoid processed meats. Processed meats, including turkey bologna, are usually high in fat.
