VegetablesMinimum three servings daily, preferably five. A serving is 1/2 cup of chopped vegetables or a floret of broccoli, a medium carrot, and so on.
FruitMinimum two servings daily, preferably four. A serving is a medium apple, an orange, or a half cup of berries.
CerealEat one that delivers a minimum of 5 grams of fiber per serving daily.
GrainsMinimum six servings daily, preferably more. A serving is 1/2 cup of corn, whole grain rice, wheat, pasta, or two slices of whole grain bread.
SnacksThe best snack food available in all supermarkets is small carrots that are pre-washed and packaged.
BeveragesAvoid all sugared beverages. Learn to use whole-pulp fruit juice. Read the ingredients list, and remember that corn sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup, and corn sugars are all names for sugar. If you have an alcoholic beverage, always accompany it with food, avoid having alcohol with highly sugared foods such as desserts, and always drink in moderation.
