K-Factor

K-factor is the ratio of sodium to potassium in our diets. When the average dietary K-factor is 3 or more, the incidence of hypertension is very low, less than 2 percent of the population and mostly restricted to very overweight people. As the ratio approaches 1, the incidence of high blood pressure in the population increases dramatically, as shown in the following Table.

K-Factor and High Blood Pressure in a Population

K-Factor Incidence of High Blood Pressure
4.0 or more 2%
1.1 26%
0.4 33%

A correct K-factor can't be restored by simply adding potassium back to the diet to offset the sodium, because the total amount of salt, more specifically sodium, must be considered. People with high blood pressure absolutely must control their sodium intake, salt consumption, and K-factor. Anyone who lives, works, or commutes in a stressful occupation or environment should also control their dietary K-factor.

Manage K-Factor and Control Salt in Your Diet

Managing K-factor and dietary salt is a simple, effective way to directly and indirectly reduce the amount of stress placed on your body, by

  • Improving cardiovascular health,

  • Placing less stress on your kidneys,

  • Lowering blood pressure.

  • Reducing fluid retention, and

  • Making weight control easier.

As your health improves, so does your ability to handle stress.
