NAWCH works at national and local level, representing children's
interests in the planning and delivery of health services, and
advising and supporting parents of children admitted to hospital,
conducting surveys, publishing reports and organizing conferences,
seminars and study days. Its 10-point Charter is endorsed by many
professional and voluntary bodies concerned with caring for sick
children. NAWCH offers practical help with driving parents to
hospital, providing play materials and running hospital play
schemes, and encouraging the concept of parents and professionals
working together, with the Room for Parents campaign. For parents,
they publish a useful 32-page handbook, Your Child in Hospital,
covering preparing for a hospital stay, talking to children about
it, visiting, staying with your child in hospital, liaising with the
medical team who will be caring for your child, and dealing with any
problems on home-coming. There is also a leaflet, Corning into
Hospital, and for children, an illustrated leaflet in comic strip
form, When I Went into Hospital. Excellent reading lists are
available with a wealth of publications suitable for children of up
to 12 years concerning a variety of aspects of having medical tests
and going into hospital.
