It is possible to develop personal strategies for coping with individual stress levels in a variety of situations which most people experience at some time or other in their lives. These preventive tactics aim to defuse stress before it becomes damaging, and help to make stress work for you rather than against you. However, there may also be times when you feel that it is just not possible to cope alone. At times like these, being aware of the extensive network of societies and organizations which exist specifically to help people cope can be of immense reassurance: most of them offer some form of special counseling geared to specific stress problems.
There is hardly an aspect of stress that is not covered in one way or another by such organizations: marital and family relations; single- parenting; childcare; bereavement; old age and the care of the elderly; drink and smoking problems; stress-related ailments such as back pain, migraine and so on. And there are societies specializing in various forms of stress therapy such as yoga and different relaxation techniques.
We had described the services offered by a number of organizations covering the stress areas. Many of them work on a 'self-help' basis, providing counseling and opportunities to discuss and share problems with others who have experienced similar forms of stress: the two are often combined. Depending, of course, on the individual, the support offered can be invaluable; most importantly, by creating the comforting feeling that you are not alone, either in experiencing stress or attempting to come to terms with it - a sure way of building a sound foundation from which to cope.
