Changes And Uncertainties At Work |

Major changes at work, like a merger or take-over or other fundamental reorganization, may all too often bring job losses without consultation, and these, together with the threat of redundancy, especially if sustained over a prolonged period, are considered to be among the most commonly encountered stressors in the work place. So are poor systems of communication and coordination, which more than anything else serve to create uncertainty.
Even if you feel secure in your job, your work may cause you stress in other ways. The desire to progress up the ladder of your career or chosen profession is a natural one, but our acutely success-conscious society, where people are not only required to be successful, but to be seen to be so, can make what should be a defined progression through a series of transitions into a highly stress-charged experience. For example, the fear of being over-looked or passed by, of not achieving a sought-after promotion, can become an over-riding preoccupation to the point of obsession; an inhibiting factor rather than a healthy incentive. Just as bad, too, can be receiving a promotion about which you feel uncertain and unable to cope with.
Other sources of stressful insecurity at work may include uncertainty about how you are rated by those to whom you are answerable, about your own specific area of responsibility, or uncertainty in the form of major, fundamental doubts about your own suitability for the job you are doing - all compounded by an overall uncertainty about how to resolve these problems.
