A number of special stressors can arise in the employee situation. Obviously they will vary according to type of job, but the following are among the most common.
UnderstaffingThis can cause considerable stress if, as a result, employees find themselves over-extended, with an unacceptable workload, and sometimes doing the job of two people.
Shift-WorkThis often involves unsociable hours which can create a stressful sense of disorientation, playing havoc with sleep patterns, social life and relationships, especially if shift hours are suddenly changed.
Poor ManagementUncommunicative and inconsiderate management can leave employees suffering from stress caused by uncertainty about their own role definition and contribution to the overall direction of the organization for which they work.
Relations With ColleaguesThese can be tricky to handle at the best of times, especially in a competitively charged working atmosphere, and if you are feeling stressed yourself you will undoubtedly affect those around you. This is one of the characteristics of stress in the work place - just one or two stressed individuals can generate further stress ‘ripples’ to a quite extraordinary degree.
Office PoliticsThese offer one of the best examples of just how double-edged stress can be. ‘Politics’ are to a greater or lesser degree inevitable wherever you work, but how you react depends very much on your personality type. Office politics are meat and drink to some people, but cause very real stress problems to others, even to the extent of preventing them from doing their job properly.
Workaholic BossDealing with the type who stays in the office till 8 p.m. and expects you to do the same is stressful.
Too much or too little to doEither of these conditions can cause stress in its own way.
