Physical Conditions

Do everything you can to make sure your personal working environment is comfortable and efficient.

  • If you spend long periods of your working day seated, your chair should support you in a comfortable position and be in the right relation to your desk height to enable you to read, write, type and word-process without experiencing any back-ache or shoulder or neck pain - all notoriously stress-prone areas.

  • VDUs can cause eye-strain, so make sure you have received adequate instruction in its use, and take special precautions on resting and relaxing your eyes.

  • Be as well organized as possible with filing systems and desk drawers, and leave a tidy desk when you go home at night, to give you a stress-free start next day. Whatever your immediate work space, keep it free of clutter.

  • If your working day is spent on your feet, make sure you relax during your breaks in an environment that is kept clean and tidy and that you sit down and eat properly at lunchtime to help you unwind.
