Workaholics

Workaholics create special stresses for themselves and for those with whom they come into contact - their work colleagues and their families. Workaholic is itself a striking symptom of stress; it may have developed as a result of overwork, so that this becomes habitual, or as a means of escape from other forms of stress, such as difficult personal relationships or an unsatisfactory home life.

Workaholics are highly stressed and stressful people who most often cause stress at home by their prolonged absences or lack of involvement, and at work by expecting too much of colleagues or employees who are unable or unwilling to work at the same hectic pace.

If you detect signs in yourself that indicate you may be developing this sort of attitude towards your work, remind yourself that there is a big difference between finding a job so fulfilling and rewarding that you are prepared to give a great deal of your time to it, and using work as a substitute for or an escape from other equally or more important things in life. Remind yourself, too, that working round the clock is not a sign of efficiency, and may be unfair on others, causing problems of resentment.
