Practice Self-Discipline

After a piano concert had ended, the concert hall steward heard someone playing the piano on stage and checked to see if an unauthorized person had sneaked into the hall. Imagine his surprise to find the concert pianist, now late for the cocktail party honoring him, playing part of the concert he had just given to an enthusiastic audience. When the steward asked why, the pianist's answer was simple: "During the third movement, I realized I could play this section a little better." That’s self-discipline!

The discipline shown by the pianist is the difference between very good and great. Most people who want to do well in their profession, hobby, or sport must develop the discipline necessary to achieve their potential. And that potential can be fantastic: examples include a deaf Miss America, one-legged skiers and mountain climbers, and a blind person who sailed solo from California to Hawaii. Every day we hear about people who achieve greatness. In- variably, they have three things going for them: first. talent and basic intelligence; second, parents, guardians. o mentors who encouraged and worked with them; and third. the self-discipline to keep working toward their goals long after average folk would have stopped.
