Keep Realistic Expectations

It's important to keep realistic expectations of what things will be like once you attain your goal. For example, lawyers are among the most "career-disturbed" professionals in America. It is easy to understand why. They have set the realistic goal of becoming lawyers and have obtained that goal. Their expectations, however, are often unrealistic. Many have grown up watching lawyer shows on television in which the brilliant lawyer saves the wrongly accused under-dog, or traps the killer. That is far from what the average lawyer does. In reality, it is a rare lawyer who is lucky enough to land a job with a law firm that isn’t mostly real estate closings and writing wills. reading countless reports searching for minor faults, or, at best, spending countless hours in a law library searching out precedents; and that is at the pinnacle of the profession in the top law firms.

The result is that an army of people are unhappy in what they are doing. Their unhappiness results in internal stress, because they expected a career that doesn’t exist. Realistic expectations are essential.
