Smokers deposit more cholesterol on their artery walls than non-smokers. Toxic chemicals in smoke irritate the cardiac arteries. In defense, the body protects the points of irritation by applying fatty deposits. These deposits, small at first, take on a life of their own and grow, producing heart disease.
Smokers have a much greater risk of heart attack than nonsmokers, and if a smoker has a heart attack. his ability to recover is less than that of a nonsmoker. Not only does smoking compromise your health, it compromises your ability to improve your health.
