Smoking And Nutrient Deficiencies

Many smokers will never quit, or will quit long after they should have, even though a doctor has given them bad news about their health. Smokers also tend to eat poorly. In fact, research published in the world’s best medical journals has consistently reported that smokers have the following dietary problems:

  • Smokers eat excessive amounts of meat.

  • Smokers’ diets fall far short in intake of vegetables and fruit.

  • Smokers' diets fall short in intake of cereals and grains.

  • Smokers tend to avoid cruciferous vegetables.

  • Smokers tend to consume above-average amounts of alcohol and caffeine.

  • Smokers’ diets lack vitamins and minerals.

While these findings indicate that smokers have worse-than-average health, the effects of smoking don’t stop there. Smokers' children, especially adolescent children, tend to have the same dietary shortfalls as their smoking parents. So, if you smoke and think it affects only you, you’re sadly mistaken; it affects everyone around you.
