Carbon monoxide in the blood from smoking increases the clumping of certain kinds of blood cells called platelets. Clumping occurs naturally when we cut ourselves-the clump of platelets develops into a clot and the bleeding stops.
When a clot forms inside a blood vessel in the head, it blocks the blood flow to a part of the brain, and that brain tissue dies. We call this a stroke.
