Tyrosine is a nonessential amino acid made from another amino acid in your body called phenylalanine. One of its functions is to produce melanin, the pigment that gives hair and skin its color and protects body against ultra-violet light.
Body uses tyrosine to make many brain chemicals such as adrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine that help regulate moods. If levels of these brain chemicals are off, your mood can be affected, potentially leading to anxiety and/or depression. During chronic stress, the levels of adrenaline become severely affected.
Many experts believe that major symptoms of depression are result of deficiency in adrenaline. Noting that drugs that deplete the body of adrenaline lead to a decrease in mood and many of the drugs that are successful in fighting depression act on the adrenaline system. For this reason, deficiencies of tyrosine are associated with depression. Supplementation with tyrosine had shown some positive results.
